Paranoia

I had created a piece of a map that did not belong to any map, figuring I would find a use for it someday. I attempted to build a map around it... four instances of it actually, as I did here as well... with "kqn3" (Horizon 9). Since kqn3/Horizon 9 was not well received, I revisited the piece of the map that I had this need to use: the launch pad that pushes the player forward, and around the inside of a cylinder, allowing the player to (naturally) land on the leading edge of a hallway 2 or 3 stories up. Adjusting one's flight would allow landing 1 story up, while using the sides of the cylinder to propel oneself higher would thus permit access to a yet higher level. Four levels proved to be the breaking point, so I reduced it to three, and then began building again. And this was the result, after several hoursa of sculpting.

The first private playtest involved myself and 3 other players. As we played, we opted for SR8s, knives, nades... and it soon became obvious that one must be VERY wary, lest you be knifed from behind, or hear the distinct sound of a nade bouncing just behind you, etc. It seemed that each of us became a bit paranoid, constantly looking over our shoulders, expecting that split-second appearance of an enemy, and quick death following. Thus... Paranoia. Unfortunately, this one did not get much play after, and I created another map several months later that just begged for the name Paranoia as well. However, as the later map was built specifically as an arena style map (albeit a smidge larger than most arena style maps... no?), and since the last letter of paranoia flowed so well into arena, the two now exist, confusing some. Two separate and completely unrelated maps with the unfortunate sharing of paranoia in their names. Or, maybe I am just parnaoid about the name thing being an issue... (sigh)
