Mountainside

Would have been map number eleven, begun in May 2012. I wanted a waterwheel, like old mills used to have, and an old village on the side of a mountain. Fast forward a few years, and after a nearly two year break from UrT and mapping... FSK405|Frog: "I wish you would make an asymmetrical map sometime." Me: "SURE!" (sigh) WTF am I going to... OOOH!!!
Yes, the waterwheel is what the entire map was sculpted around. Waterwheel, and then the brushes to create the mountain. I cut a river through, and to make life easier, I had humans use materials to force the water to go where they wanted, and to control the speed and such. Put up houses, add some tunnels in the mountain, and one under the river. Pools on either side of the waterfall/waterwheel. Lots of roofs to bop around on. And then Frog suggested the final piece: "You have snowy ground for the mountain, why not make it icy?" Oh, yes. And add some chunks of ice to the river, flowing down from up top.
I originally had a small lake as the origin up top. But, the map quickly got too big. As usual. By this time in my mapping life, I had figured out how to deal with my habit of "going big" every time; go big, and then have a few people run around. See where they go, collect feedback. And then go back in, and carve away, re-sculpt, etc. Sometimes, the "going big" is what made the map great! But, too many nooks and crannies made it a nightmare. Lots of fun for this one, definitely a favorite. Oh- and the chunks of ice are a primitive func_ut_train.
